The fishing boats of Canteras beach

Relics of the past

The last fishing boats of Canteras beach can be found in two areas. At the eastern end of the beach, right next to La Puntilla Square, there are about 30 colourfully painted and gorgeous boats lying in the sand.

At the level of the rock “Pena la Vieja” some other fishermen still defy modern developments. Because over-fishing and the overpowering international competition let prices hit rock-bottom only a handful of fishermen are still able to make a living from their job today.

Thank God, the municipal government’s attempts to remove the boats from the beach have failed so far, as the boats represent a time when many Canarios could make a living from fishing. Details like these make Canteras beach one of the most steeped in history and authentic ones of the island. At the island’s southern beaches modern motorboats are now for rent, as well as expensive deckchairs and jet skis, but not much originally Canarian though.
